For Ramesh Kumar (changed name), the assistance provided under the Namaste Scheme is not limited to the availability of equipment and training; it is a significant step towards giving sanitation workers identity, occupational safety and social dignity. Better access to health services and safer working conditions have strengthened his confidence and helped him move towards a safer future for his family.
37-year-old Ramesh Kumar, who belongs to a Scheduled Caste community and works as an assistant in extracting sludge from septic tanks, has faced occupational challenges related to sanitation work.
Continuous exposure to hazardous working conditions, lack of safety equipment and limited access to welfare facilities made his profession extremely challenging. In addition to these work‑related dangers, he also faced social stigma, low wages and financial strain, while being responsible for supporting his family, including his elderly parents.
Despite all these challenges, his aspiration was to continue his work with dignity, ensure better health services for himself and his family, and improve their standard of living. However, the lack of proper safety equipment, limited awareness of workplace safety measures and inadequate health assistance remained major obstacles.
During 2025–26, a meaningful change came to his life through the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (Namaste) Scheme, an initiative of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Under this scheme, Ramesh received a personal protective equipment (PPE) kit, an Ayushman Bharat health card, and skill and safety training.
The provided PPE kit gave him the necessary safety gear to perform sanitation tasks more safely. Skill and safety training increased his awareness of occupational hazards and proper safety measures, helping him carry out his responsibilities with greater confidence. The Ayushman Bharat health card also strengthened his access to health services and provided an important health security benefit.
These initiatives have brought a positive shift in his working conditions and outlook on life. With increased safety awareness and assured access to protective equipment, he can now work more safely and efficiently. The safer and more efficient methods have also led to a modest increase in his earnings.
Through initiatives like Namaste, the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment is steadily advancing its vision of a safer, healthier and more dignified sanitation system, ensuring that sanitation workers receive the safety, health assistance and respect they deserve.
