Rajasthan’s 27‑year‑old sanitation worker Ramesh Kumar (pseudonym) is moving toward a safer, better future with the help of the National Action for Mechanised Sanitation Ecosystem (NEMASTI) scheme. His journey demonstrates how workplace safety, labour dignity and institutional support are crucial in improving the lives of sanitation workers.

Ramesh’s journey shows how timely assistance and welfare measures can bring meaningful change to sanitation workers and their families.

His experience exemplifies how the NEMASTI scheme promotes workplace safety, strengthens livelihood security and earns respect for those who provide essential sanitation services.

Being from an economically weak family and dependent on daily wages, Ramesh faced many challenges in maintaining financial stability and meeting his family’s basic needs.

As a sewer worker, his job involved various occupational hazards and he had to work in unsafe conditions. The lack of adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) increased the risks associated with his daily tasks.

Despite these challenges, Ramesh remained determined to improve his family’s situation and earn a livelihood with greater safety and respect. Receiving appropriate safety equipment was a crucial step toward that goal.

In 2025, under the NEMASTI scheme Ramesh was provided with a PPE kit and a safety kit to strengthen workplace protection. This assistance gave him the necessary safety gear for his job, further emphasizing the importance of working safely in sanitation tasks.

Thanks to this help, Ramesh can now perform his duties with greater confidence and a stronger sense of security. Receiving safety equipment has addressed major safety concerns at work and reduced the risk of accidents.

This support has also reinforced the security of his livelihood and improved his family’s standard of living.

The NEMASTI scheme reflects the Government of India’s commitment to protecting the health, safety and dignity of sanitation workers. Through promoting the availability of safety gear, adopting better work practices and focusing on workers’ welfare, the scheme aims to create a safer and more respectful sanitation ecosystem.
