The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT), operating under the Ministry of Textiles, Government of India, has undertaken a wide range of initiatives in its campuses under ‘Special Campaign 6’ covering cleanliness, sanitation, waste management, infrastructure upkeep and environmental sustainability, achieving notable results. The formal launch of the campaign took place on 2 October 2026 at the NIFT Delhi campus in the dignified presence of the Ministry of Textiles Secretary, senior officials and directors. Senior leadership’s participation underscored the launch and reinforced the Ministry’s commitment to promoting cleanliness, environmental protection and sustainable institutional practices. The campaign ran from 2 October to 31 October 2026, engaging students, teachers and staff to create a cleaner, greener, safer and more sustainable campus environment.
Comprehensive cleanliness and improved sanitation across the campus
Large‑scale cleaning drives were conducted in academic blocks, workshops, canteens, hostels, corridors, rooftops, storage areas and other shared spaces. Spider webs, settled dust, litter and unwanted items were removed. Furniture, fans, computer equipment, water tanks and drainage systems were also cleaned, raising the overall level of campus hygiene and sanitation.
Effective waste management and digital upkeep
Special emphasis was placed on segregation and proper disposal of waste. E‑waste and scrap were disposed of according to prescribed procedures. To strengthen digital upkeep, improve record‑keeping and optimise storage, e‑files were cleared and obsolete physical records were sorted out and removed.
Environmental sustainability and green practices
Under environmental initiatives, NIFT carried out tree‑planting, gardening and pruning to increase campus greenery. A demonstration was also held on converting leaves, fruit waste and leftover food into biodegradable compost, promoting the useful use of organic waste and responsible environmental habits.
‘Waste to Art’ – promoting creativity and reuse
Reflecting NIFT’s creative and design‑driven ethos, the institute launched a ‘Waste to Art’ activity. It showcased how discarded items can be transformed into useful and decorative objects. These creatively crafted pieces were also used to embellish parts of the campus, reinforcing the principles of reuse, recycling and waste reduction.
Infrastructure maintenance and campus beautification
Various maintenance tasks were undertaken to improve the campus’s infrastructure, safety and functionality. These included inspection and repair of electrical equipment, fixing faulty switches, sockets and dangling wires, as well as work on lifts, hostel buildings and doors
Maintenance of furniture, fixtures and campus fencing was also carried out. Termite‑preventive measures and pest control were implemented in academic, administrative and residential blocks. Additionally, heaters, blowers, geysers, HVAC systems, air‑conditioners, air‑handling units (AHUs) and air‑purification units were cleaned and serviced to keep the campus environment clean, healthy and safe.
Student participation and awareness activities
To raise awareness and encourage active student involvement, NIFT organised several competitions and awareness programmes during the campaign. These included a slogan‑writing contest on ‘The Importance of Cleanliness and E‑waste Management’ and painting and poetry competitions on cleanliness. Posters, banners, placards and standees were displayed at prominent locations to spread messages on cleanliness and environmental protection. Winners of the competitions were honoured to motivate continued participation.
Recognition of cleaning and maintenance staff
In recognition of the invaluable contribution of cleaning and maintenance personnel, NIFT honoured its staff on 27 October 2026. The award acknowledged their dedicated efforts in maintaining campus cleanliness, affirming their crucial role in sustaining a clean and healthy institutional environment and reinforcing the principle of ‘dignity of labour’.
Through its dedicated efforts under ‘Special Campaign 6’, NIFT reaffirmed its commitment to the Ministry of Textiles’ vision of promoting cleanliness, environmental sustainability and responsible resource management. The campaign demonstrated that collective participation, innovative approaches and sustained effort can bring meaningful improvements to institutional cleanliness and environmental protection. These initiatives will further nurture a culture of cleanliness, creativity and sustainability, contributing to the realisation of a cleaner, greener and more sustainable India.
