The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) continued its anti‑drug operations and on 21 October 2026 seized 5.6 kg heroin in a intelligence‑based raid near Jalandhar, Punjab, at Fagwara, arresting four persons.
Acting on specific intelligence about drug movement on a public‑transport bus, DRI officials monitored the Fagwara area, stopped a bus and identified four suspects travelling as passengers.
During searches under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, officers found five packets wrapped in yellow adhesive tape in a bag on one suspect’s lap. Each packet contained two smaller packets, making a total of ten packets. Laboratory tests confirmed heroin (known locally in Punjab as “chitta”) in all ten packets. A total of 5.6 kg of the prohibited substance was seized and confiscated under the NDPS Act, and all four alleged participants were arrested.
Heroin is a highly addictive opioid that depresses the central nervous system and poses serious risks of dependence, respiratory depression, overdose and death. In India it is a prohibited drug under the NDPS Act, 1985. Unauthorised possession, trafficking, transport or sale attracts stringent penalties; for commercial quantities, Section 21(C) provides 10‑20 years’ rigorous imprisonment and a fine of ₹1‑2 lakh, with higher fines also possible.
The seizure in Punjab underscores DRI’s continued efforts to disrupt drug supply chains and bring those involved in illegal trafficking to justice.
