Timely medical assistance, evidence‑based treatment and continuous family support play a crucial role in helping people overcome drug addiction and rebuild their lives.

The journey of 31‑year‑old Amit (alias) from Kamrup metropolitan district, Assam, shows how coordinated medical care and ongoing rehabilitation can aid long‑term recovery and reintegration into society.

Amit is a graduate and is self‑employed. His path to recovery began when his condition deteriorated after a lethal heroin overdose. He was admitted to the emergency department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Guwahati, where he was struggling to breathe and needed immediate medical aid. During his hospital stay he was also diagnosed with hepatitis‑C. Opioid addiction had severely impacted his health and life, making timely comprehensive treatment essential.

Despite these challenges, Amit remained determined to quit drugs. Encouragement and practical help from his family played a key role in continuing treatment and moving toward health. After his condition stabilised, he was transferred to the neuro‑psychiatry ward, where he received opioid substitution therapy (OST) with buprenorphine. He also received treatment for hepatitis‑C and relapse‑prevention therapy. Thus both his medical needs and the psychological and social challenges linked to addiction were addressed.

After discharge, Amit continued his treatment under medical supervision, which included buprenorphine‑naloxone medication, psychosocial interventions, nursing support and regular follow‑up consultations. Ongoing monitoring and counselling helped him adhere to his treatment plan and maintain progress toward recovery. This coordinated approach ensured that his care extended beyond emergency care to include continuous physical and mental health support.

A pivotal moment in Amit’s rehabilitation came when he secured employment within two‑to‑three months of recovery. This achievement enabled him to engage in meaningful work, contribute financially to his family and attain greater stability in his personal and social life. His progress demonstrates how proper treatment and sustained support can help people rebuild livelihoods and become more self‑reliant.

Amit has adhered to his treatment for over a year and remains completely abstinent from drugs. During this period he has not relapsed. His health continues to improve, and under doctors’ supervision his medication dosage is being tapered gradually. His journey underscores the importance of timely emergency care, evidence‑based treatment, relapse prevention, regular follow‑up and family support in achieving lasting recovery from addiction.

Through the Addiction Treatment Facility (ATF) at AIIMS Guwahati, Amit received coordinated medical and psychosocial assistance, helping him recover from a life‑threatening emergency and move toward sustained improvement. His experience highlights the value of accessible treatment and rehabilitation services, which enable people to regain health, strengthen family ties, rebuild livelihoods and reintegrate into society. His story offers hope that, with proper treatment, continuous support and personal resolve, overcoming drug addiction is entirely possible.
