Mexico and India have taken a major step to strengthen economic and trade relations by signing sector‑specific terms for PTA talks. The agreement sets a framework, scope, procedures and plan for negotiations, aimed at creating new economic opportunities for both countries.

With this pact, formal talks have begun on a PTA that will be mutually beneficial and balanced, aiming to expand bilateral trade, generate business opportunities, increase investment flows and build a robust, diversified supply chain.

The initiative stems from talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Dr. Claudia Sheinbaum at the G‑7 summit in Canada in June 2025, where both leaders agreed to deepen the India‑Mexico partnership.

During Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal’s visit, the two delegations discussed ways to enhance bilateral relations and trade‑investment flows. The talks were held with Mexico’s Deputy Foreign Trade Minister Luis Rosendo Gutierrez Román, representing Trade Minister Marcelo Abrard Casabón.

The sector‑specific terms cover key areas such as market access for goods, rules of origin, customs procedures and trade facilitation, dispute settlement, sanitary and phytosanitary measures, technical barriers to trade and other trade‑related issues.

The proposed pact aims to leverage the complementary strengths of both economies and expand opportunities for Mexican products and businesses in the Indian market. Owing to strong links in global value chains, Mexico is a significant market for Indian exporters and investors. Priority sectors include automotive, chemicals, electronics, pharmaceuticals, agri‑food, energy, critical minerals, medical devices and advanced manufacturing.

The delegations also discussed various aspects of the bilateral economic agenda, identifying opportunities to deepen trade and investment ties, strengthen cooperation and develop stronger links between the two countries’ productive sectors.

Both sides considered sending a Mexican trade delegation to India in the first quarter of 2027, a mission that would facilitate B2B meetings, help identify business opportunities and reinforce trade relations between the two nations’ industrial sectors.
